Looking beyond Metro
Posted on July 10th, 2005 at 7:57 am by JustinWhen deciding on where to buy a home (for themselves or as an investment property), many turn at the early stages to the WMATA site to see exactly where Metro stations and bus stops are located. Well, starting today, the DC Circulator, a new form of public transportation begins running in portions of the downtown area. Currently, there are just the two lines, but expected (in a few more years) are two more lines which will service the (alliterative) Monuments, Museums, and Memorials down on the Mall. For more details on that, see the DC report. WMATA will manage the system and provide seamless synergy through Circulator’s acceptance of SmarTrip and free transfers. Already taking Metrobus? Consider what the Post says; namely that the Circulator runs more frequently and is cheaper ($1 compared to $1.25). But do buses benefit the city in general? You bet. Ask an urban planner which public transportation system is least expensive to start up, most efficient, and best for the environment and they will tell you a wonderful story about Curitiba, a city with a public bus system at the heart of their urban development.
